Parcel letterbox or home parcel locker?

Both keep parcels safe. The difference is what the courier has to do.

A home parcel locker asks the courier to open a door — with a code, a key or an app. A keyless parcel letterbox asks for nothing: any courier can deliver, with no keys, codes or apps. Here is how each one works, and which suits your home.

How a home parcel locker works

A home parcel locker is a lockable cabinet at your front door or boundary. To deliver, the courier opens a door, puts the parcel inside and closes it. How they open it depends on the locker:

  • A code that you give each sender or courier.
  • An app or smart lock, which usually needs power and wi-fi.
  • A key, for a regular courier you know.

A locker works well when the courier has the code and uses it. If they don't, the parcel can't go in. Many single-door lockers also stay locked after the first delivery, so a second courier can't get in until you have emptied it.

How a keyless parcel letterbox works

A keyless parcel letterbox has a receiving drawer on top and a locked compartment below. The courier places the parcel in the drawer and closes it, and the parcel drops into the locked compartment, safe until you collect it with your key. The drawer and the compartment are never open to the outside at the same time.

  • No code to give out, no app and no power.
  • It takes delivery after delivery until the compartment is full.
  • Letters go in through the slot, into the same locked compartment.

Which suits your home?

A parcel locker may suit you if most of your parcels come from one or two senders who will reliably use your code.

A keyless parcel letterbox suits you if parcels come from many different couriers, you don't want to hand out codes or rely on an app or power, and you want letters and parcels in one secure box.

There are three sizes, taking parcels up to 11 L, 25 L or 62 L. The Extra-Large is Australia's largest keyless parcel letterbox.
